in hanoi, With a long history of development, Hanoi Old Quarter or Hanoi – 36 Old Streets (consisting of 36 old streets inside) is famous for the ancient beauty of architecture from the 15th century. It is so great for tourists to explore the old-styled narrow streets and houses, the colorful souvenir shops, and try some famous traditional dishes of Hanoi.
Follow the map below to have an interesting Old Quarter walking tour.
Starting at the beginning of Cau Go Street, visitors will pass the famous Ava Coffee Lounge. Then, walking about 100m to Gia Ngu Street, which sells many kinds of scarves and underwear, along with rows of clothes stores for the middle-aged.
Look at the map above, you can turn right on Gia Ngu Street to reach Hang Be market (No.1), cross the street to Nguyen Huu Huan (No.2). If you are tired or hungry, a bowl of Xoi Xeo at Xoi Yen restaurant here is great to give you energy for the next walk. From the crossroad, turn to Hang Bac Street and keep walking to the middle of the street, you will be overwhelmed by many sparkling gold and silver shops.
A Street on Hanoi Old Quarter
At the conjunction (N0.3), go straight ahead is Luong Ngoc Quyen Street – a famous place of snack food, where a lot of traditional cakes like Banh Day, Banh Gio or Banh Chin Tang May are displayed. They all draw your stomach so much.
Passing here is the 208 meter-long Hang Giay Street selling viet namese specialty – Thit Bo Kho (Dried spiced beef) and pottery products.

The next stop is Hang Buom Street with numbers of grocery and wine stores. Especially, at 76Hang Buom Street, there is the ancient Bach Ma Temple (N0. 5), which visitors can’t ignore.
After finishing your trip on Hang Buom Street, turn back to the junction with Hang Giay. Keep moving and you will meet Hang Chieu Street. Turn right and witness one of the 21 castle gates of Thang Long – Quan Chuong Gate. Suffering from the damage of time, the gate still remains its original shape with one main gate and 2 two small ones in the both sides.

Another ideal destination is Dong Xuan Market with the main gate on Dong Xuan Street. However, tourists can enter this biggest wholesale market in Hanoi from Cau Dong or Hang Khoai Street. It takes you just a few minutes walking from the last stop. Many kinds of products being sold here from household electric appliances, silks, clothes to fresh food like chicken, meat, vegetable. Especially, Dong Xuan is well-known for street-food stalls and Hanoi night market.
From the main gate of Dong Xuan Market, turn right and go ahead to get Hang Duong Street, where is the home of dried sweet fruits or vegetables called O Mai (N0. 8). On this street, the tourists can visit Cau Dong Pagoda, built during the 17th century, worshiping the Prime MinisterTran Thu Do, who had a major contribution to give birth to Tran Dynasty (1225-1400).
Passing a small street called Hang Ca is to arrive at Cha Ca Street. The visitors can enjoy delicious Cha Ca dishes at No.4 store.

After enjoying the delighted dish, keep moving ahead to get Lan Ong Street where is full of northern medicine stores and then meet Hang Can Street. Walking to the end of this street, then turn right, you’ll see Hang Gai Street – the paradise of silk-lovers with shimmering scarves and stoles, clothes, and handbags.
Continuingly, it may take you 5 minutes to get Ly Quoc Su Street, where is crowded with clothes shop and Ly Quoc Su Temple is located. The end of the street is the magnificent Saint Joseph Cathedral at 40 Nha Chung Street, where often hold religious activities for all Christian believers. The church was built in 1882 and designed according to Gothic architecture that still remains its original beauty.
Hanoi night market is crowded and attractive
Turn right when you see the first lane get Le Thai To Street, where is a famous part of Hoan Kiem Lake. It would be great to take a small tour around the lake, take some photos or to watch the green water surface.
Reaching the fountain on Dinh Tien Hoang Street is also the end of the walking tour. Although there are still some old streets we haven’t looked at like Hang Ngang, Hang Dao or Hang Ma Street, tourists are suggested to spend them for the night trip because Hanoi night market is most wonderful on those streets.
