Cua Bac Church in Hanoi

The exterior and interior overhauling work of Cua Bac Church started in late 2013 and took up to 19 months to be accomplished on November 4, 2014. The credit of the preservation went to father Joseph Nguyen Van Lien administration. Cua Bac church was inaugurated with the dedication of the cathedral church by the presence of Archbishop Pierre Nguyen Van Nhon as the presiding officer. The ceremony took place with the full attendance of local parishioners and the history and featured photographs of the church were officially introduced.

Cua Bac Church (Vietnamese: Nhà thờ Cửa Bắc) is a Roman Catholic church in Hanoi, Vietnam. Originally named as Church of Martyrs (French: église des Martyrs), the church was built in 1932 by the French administration of Indochina as a part of the Hanoi’s urban plan supervised by Ernest Hébrard. Today, Cua Bac Church is one of the three major churches of Hanoi, together with Ham Long Church and Saint Joseph Cathedral. In November, 2006, the Cua Bac Catholic Church became the venue of joint worship service of the Vietnamese Catholics and Protestants with participation of the United States President George W. Bush, who was on an official visit to Vietnam.


Architecturally, the church consists of a large rectangular space with two rows of columns extending parallel to the two sides, is divided into a relatively small space and a reception space for the solemn celebration of the saint ceremony, known as the sanctuary .

Between the two areas have a large space beneath the dome, there is a big space available to put the altar worshipping God and the saints. Interior space is built and decorated entirely based on the design of an typical European church.

French architect Ernest Hébrard, has created some space asymmetric architecture with a bell tower soaring main lobby side. This gives Cua Bac church special characteristics in comparison with the majority of Christain structures in Hanoi.

Roof systems are pulled through from steeple to a dome over the main and auxiliary space that shows a familiar landscape had been caught somewhere in the house, a traditional temple in the village Vietnam.

Cua Bac has been standing tall and firmly in the trace of time thanks to the smart design and meticulous constructing effort of the church’s original administration. This holy place will continue to be one of essential site of the history of the Capital city.
