The most popular way to get around in Ho Chi Minh City is by motorbike taxi, or ‘moto’, and while it can be hair-raising to zip around on the back of a fast-moving bike, it’s undoubtedly the quickest and most cost efficient way of getting around.

How to get around in Ho Chi Minh City
Vietnam’s largest city is a dizzying metropolis, sprawling over more than 2,000 square-kilometers, and its traffic-jammed streets are a blur of taxis, cyclos and motorbikes, making DIY sightseeing a daunting task for visitors. Thankfully, despite the apparent chaos, it’s actually cheap and easy to get around in Ho Chi Minh City, vietnam and there are plenty of options to get you from a to b. Here’s what you need to know.

Motorbike

The most popular way to get around in Ho Chi Minh City is by motorbike taxi, or ‘moto’, and while it can be hair-raising to zip around on the back of a fast-moving bike, it’s undoubtedly the quickest and most cost efficient way of getting around. Motos are ubiquitous, so you won’t have to look far for a ride, and many drivers speak a little English, especially in District 1. Do make sure that you are given a helmet to wear (it’s illegal to ride without one and you could be issued a fine) and agree on a price you’re happy with upfront (a little haggling is often required, especially in the main touristy areas). Motorbikes and mopeds are also available to travelers to rent, but unless you’re an extremely experienced driver, this is a pastime better suited to a quiet country town.

Cyclo

Another frequent sight on the streets of Ho Chi Minh City is the Cyclo (a three-wheeled rickshaw-like vehicle pedalled from behind), and for short distances this can be a fun and unique way to get around. However, while riding in a cyclo around Ho Chi Minh City is definitely something you should try once, it’s better for a scenic sightseeing tour, than getting you to an appointment on time.

Taxis

The most comfortable way to get around is by taxi, although be aware that with so much traffic on the road, it’s often one of the slowest options. However, if you’re worried about safety, traveling at night or in bad weather, or going a long distance, it’s probably the best choice. Taxis are typically an affordable option, but there are seemingly endless taxis, so choose a reliable taxi firm (Vina, Vinasun and Mai Linh are all good options) or ask your hotel to book one for you. Taxi fares can vary quite wildly, so be sure the taxi driver turns the meter on when you set off and ask for an estimate up front if you’re unsure. It’s a good idea to carry small change and try to pay with the exact amount, and be aware that many drivers will have limited English – carrying a map to point at or a business card for your hotel is a good idea.

On foot

With attractions spread out around the city and so many affordable transport options, few travelers opt to get around Ho Chi Minh City on foot. It is possible to walk between the sights, but once you see the traffic it might put you off! The trick to crossing the road is to walk slowly and confidently, keeping a constant look out for cars and motorbikes – while the traffic can be overwhelming, it’s rarely going fast and if you walk slowly, you’ll find it weaving around you. Thankfully, if it gets too much, you can just flag down a moto.
